Dear Dr. De Haan:

From your letter of the 22nd June I gather that you are not prepared to give the undertaking for which I asked in my letter of the previous day, nor to accept our financial conditions. You object to any condition which is not imposed upon any other lecturer. If in the case of any other lecturer we had the same situation to deal with as that which has arisen in your case we should make the same demand. We are not making one rule for you and another for the other lecturers. We are only as practical men providing for a case which has arisen on precisely the same principles as those which we should apply in any other case. Please let me have from you within the next few days a definite statement that you reject or accept our conditions as stated in my letters of the i9th and 2ist June -1 cannot prolong the corre-spondence and I must ask you to answer definitely one way or another -yes or no. Yours sincerely,

Goadby

Eindeloos slepen de epistels zich voort. Hij wil niet bukken voor de eisen van het gouvernement, zoals duidelijk blijkt uit een schrijven van 20 juli:

DearDr. de Haan:

I am very sorry that you should adopt so uncompromising an attitude. You have throughout laboured under a complete mis-apprehension as to the result of your interview with Mr. Bentwich. Mr. Bentwich is clear that it was to be a condition of your re-appointment that you should give an undertaking to cease from political activity. In this opinion and in mine it was hopeless to try and reform your class if you continued your interest in politics and wrote to the papers articles which would excite the students againstyou.

Dan volgt, gedateerd 8 augustus 1922, het volgende schrijven van Bentwich: Dear Dr. De Haan:

I have your letter of July 24th in which you state that you are prepared to give the undertaking which we asked for. I am glad to have that assurance and we shall do our best to bring about a reconciliation with the students. As Mr. Goadby pointed out in his letter, the undertaking will be to cease
